The cookbook is a must for anyone who enjoys cooking unpretentious food with bold flavours.
In creating Stewed! in 2008, Alan gave the humble stew a much needed makeover. He started selling his pots of stews in Alexandra palace Farmers’ markets and within 2 years had secured listing in some of the biggest retailers in the country. He regularly advises budding entrepreneurs on their food business ideas and can offer advice and guidance to any developing food entrepreneur.
Alan has been both featured for his One Pot meals and contributed articles and recipes for The Times.
As a former pupil at Leiths, Alan came back several years later to teach his highly successful one pot cooking class. His sessions are always booked up well advance and he is now a regular face in the line-up of guest teachers at the prestigious cookery school. He has also been a guest speaker at their ‘Setting up a food Business’ course run by Chris Barber where he shares his insights into starting a food business from scratch including all the highs and lows.
Picturehouse 2013. As head of Food Operations he oversees all food eaten in the cafes, restaurants and kiosks of this highly regarded cinema business. He sets the food strategy for all new propositions, defining the spaces from conceptual stage. He then goes on to hire the chefs, design the kitchen layout, develop menus and presentation of food. His most recent project was to mastermind the food proposition at Picturehouse Central, the flagship venue opened in June 2015 with 250 covers spanning a ground floor New York deli inspired café and a 1st floor bar and restaurant.
Guild of Food Writers
Alan has been a member of the Guild of Food Writers for several years and has spoken at their event focussing on diversifying within the food business.
Alan worked with M&C Saatchi to create a selection of inspirational recipes on behalf of Pernod Ricard to accompany classic Havana Club rum based cocktails. The recipes were used for an international training programme aimed at inspiring restaurants and bars around the globe to think more creatively around how they serve cocktails in their venues. Alan was asked back a second time to do the same work for some additional drinks. Many of the photos used on this site were shot during Alan's work with Havana Club. Good Food Channel
As a stew expert, Alan was asked to be a judge on an episode of the 2nd series of Perfect . The episode focussed on Comfort Food with Matt Tebbutt and Paul Merrett as the chefs facing the judge’s. Watch the video here.
For two years, Alan was the monthly food columnist for GT. His column mixed a lifestyle piece with a monthly recipe and had a loyal following.
Alan was a demonstrator at the roots Festival at Portobello market in January 2012. Alan showcased off the cuff recipes for British roots using all locally sourced ingredients in Portobello market. The event highlighted local produce with a view to championing sustainability and the support of small business
The Allergy & Free From Show, Olympia
This yearly trade and consumer event has become the focus for all free from products. Alan was asked to demonstrate some gluten free recipes on the Sainsbury’s demonstration stand and showcased his gluten free beef in ale stew with horseradish and stilton dumplings.
Alan has demonstrated now at Gefiltefest (the Jewish Food Festival) for 3 years and has begun teaching regularly at this North London institution. His vegetarian and meat one pot cooking classes have been a success and he is planning a fish and tapas course for the New Year.
